BuzzBallz cocktail packaging deemed unrecyclable, draws greenwashing criticism
BuzzBallz premixed cocktails, popular with Gen Z, are sold in containers that combine a PET plastic body with a fused aluminium lid. Recycling experts say the attached lid makes the packaging unrecyclable in standard curb‑side systems, and the UK packaging watchdog WRAP labelled the brand's recyclability claims as greenwashing.
TerraCycle runs a mail‑back recycling program for BuzzBallz packaging, but it is limited to the United States and only open to adults aged 21 or older. The company and BuzzBallz have faced backlash after website FAQs claimed the packs were recyclable in the UK, a statement later deleted following inquiries. BuzzBallz was founded by teacher Merrilee Kick and was acquired by the Sazerac Company in 2024, whose CEO Jake Wenz has not commented on the controversy.
