BVG expands new Series J subway trains to Berlin's U9 line
The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) is expanding the deployment of its new Series J subway trains to the U9 line starting Monday. Initially, two trains consisting of six cars each will operate on the line, with more units expected to follow in the coming weeks.
Currently, 124 Series J cars are in service, having first been deployed on the U5 line following their initial delivery in May. The BVG aims to increase the total number of these new vehicles to 170 by the end of the year. This fleet renewal, which also includes the Series JK for lines U1 through U4, is intended to replace aging stock and stabilize operations.
The introduction of new rolling stock has already shown improvements in reliability. On the U5 line, the rate of trains running according to schedule rose from an average of 98.4 percent last year to 99 percent since the Series J began operating approximately four and a half months ago.
