BWXT to deploy microreactor at Fort Campbell for U.S. Army

BWX Technologies (BWXT) has been selected to deploy its 20-megawatt-electric BWXT Advanced Nuclear Reactor (BANR) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, under the U.S. Army’s Janus program. The initiative, launched in October 2025 in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit, aims to provide resilient, always-on baseload power to critical military installations while advancing next-generation reactor technology.

Under the Janus program structure, selected vendors own, construct, and operate the reactors themselves rather than selling them to a utility. BWXT is the first vendor to be assigned a specific site. The company plans to break ground on site construction in late 2028, with reactor operations expected to begin in the early 2030s.

The first phase of the contract includes final site selection within Fort Campbell, initiating nuclear regulatory processes, and starting TRISO fuel fabrication at existing BWXT facilities. While the microreactor will provide reliable electricity for critical assets, the base will continue to draw power from the existing electrical grid.
