BYD and CATL target 2027 for solid-state battery pilot production

Leading battery manufacturers BYD and CATL are accelerating the development of solid-state battery (SSB) technology, with both companies aiming to begin pilot production by 2027.

BYD has recently filed several patents focused on overcoming technical hurdles, such as maintaining stable contact between electrodes and solid electrolytes over thousands of charge cycles. Their research includes a dual-electrolyte cathode combining halide and sulfide materials, as well as multi-layered cathode structures using both monocrystalline and polycrystalline materials to balance durability with fast ion transfer. These innovations aim to improve safety, charging speed, and overall battery lifespan.

While pilot production is targeted for 2027, mass production for the general consumer market is not expected until approximately 2030. Initially, the high manufacturing costs of solid-state technology are expected to limit its use to premium, high-performance electric vehicles. Solid-state batteries offer significant advantages over current lithium-ion technology, including higher energy density, lower weight, and increased resistance to overheating and fire, potentially enabling electric vehicle ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers.
