BYD and Smart team up to expand affordable EV leasing in Australia

BYD, the world’s leading new‑energy vehicle maker, and Smart, Australia’s largest salary‑packaging and novated‑leasing provider, announced a strategic partnership aimed at making electric‑vehicle (EV) ownership more accessible and affordable. The deal creates a direct pathway for eligible employees—more than 2.5 million across government, healthcare, education, corporate and not‑for‑profit sectors—to consider BYD or its premium brand DENZA EVs through a Smart novated lease at the point of purchase, leveraging specific tax savings under the government’s electric‑car discount.

The partnership coincides with accelerating EV adoption in the country; battery‑electric vehicles accounted for 23 % of new‑vehicle sales in June 2026, according to VFACTS data. BYD Australia reported year‑to‑date sales of 52,335 vehicles, more than double the figure a year earlier. Smart supports over 580,000 salary‑packaging customers and manages more than 120,000 novated‑lease and fleet vehicles, providing customers with guidance on affordability, total cost of ownership and tax advantages.

BYD Australia General Manager Wing You said the company is focused on making new‑energy vehicle ownership simple and accessible, while Smart’s Group Executive Sid Jha emphasized that the collaboration removes a major barrier to the nation’s EV transition.
