BYD Atto 1 becomes Australia's cheapest new car following price cut
BYD has reduced the price of its entry-level 2026 Atto 1 Essential in Australia to $AU19,990, including all additional fees. This limited-time offer, available from September 15 to December 15, makes the model the cheapest new car available in the country across all fuel types, including petrol and hybrid vehicles.
Previously, the title of Australia’s cheapest new car was held by the petrol-powered Kia Picanto Sport. While the MG3 Vibe currently matches the Atto 1’s price through a cashback offer, that promotion is scheduled to end on September 30.
Industry experts suggest this price drop addresses a major barrier to electric vehicle adoption: upfront affordability. Julie Delvecchio, CEO of the Electric Vehicle Council, noted that while EVs offer lower running and maintenance costs, the initial purchase price has historically kept those savings out of reach for many Australians. Although the Atto 1 is not yet a market leader compared to models like the Tesla Model Y, its pricing is expected to shift the conversation regarding price parity between electric and internal combustion engine vehicles.
