BYD expands manufacturing operations in Bahia, Brazil

BYD is significantly expanding its industrial complex in Camaçari, Bahia, transitioning from assembling imported kits to manufacturing core components locally. The company has completed civil works for new welding and painting facilities, with stamping unit construction also underway. This shift aims to increase the use of national components and processes by 2027.

The manufacturer currently employs 9,000 direct workers at the site, with over 1,100 undergoing training for these new industrial operations. To meet rising demand, BYD plans to double its planned production capacity to 600,000 vehicles per year, seeking licenses to expand the complex. The facility is intended to serve as a production hub for both Brazil and the broader Latin American market.

BYD's growth in Brazil has been rapid, with vehicle registrations increasing from 17,937 in 2023 to 112,814 in 2025. The company aims to achieve market leadership in Brazil by 2030, competing with established brands such as Fiat, Volkswagen, and Chevrolet. Currently, the company faces a production gap, receiving orders for approximately 30,000 vehicles per month while aiming for a monthly production rate of 25,000 by the end of 2026.
