BYD faces sales declines and rapid model updates
BYD is undergoing significant product shifts and facing sales challenges in its key markets. In China, the Han sedan experienced a sharp decline in sales, with registrations for the first three quarters of 2026 dropping by approximately 69% compared to the previous year. This downturn has prompted the company to accelerate its model update cycles, including the introduction of a new generation of the Han featuring increased dimensions and higher power outputs.
In the European market, specifically Germany, BYD has discontinued the fully electric version of the Seal U SUV, leaving only the Seal U DM-i plug-in-hybrid available. Data indicates a strong consumer preference for the hybrid variant, which accounted for roughly 90% of Seal U registrations between January and September 2026.
Additionally, the company is preparing for the 2027 release of the third-generation Tang SUV. This upcoming model is expected to move into the luxury segment with a radical cockpit redesign featuring a massive integrated screen array and an adaptive DiSus suspension system.
