Chinese electric‑vehicle maker BYD has filed a patent describing a novel solid‑state electrolyte membrane aimed at boosting ionic conductivity and mechanical strength in next‑generation batteries. The filing does not include data on energy density, charging speed, cycle life or production costs, leaving the practical performance of the technology unquantified.

BYD plans pilot‑scale production of solid‑state cells by 2027, but it does not expect market‑ready vehicles before then. The move is part of a broader Chinese effort to secure intellectual‑property rights and position domestic manufacturers ahead of global rivals, with other firms such as CATL also investing in solid‑state research. Technical hurdles—including dendrite formation, interface stability, high cost and manufacturing complexity—remain, meaning early applications are likely limited to premium models or demonstration fleets.
