BYD interested in acquiring Stellantis plant in Brampton

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown revealed that Chinese automaker BYD contacted him approximately six months ago regarding the potential acquisition of the inactive Stellantis plant near Toronto. According to Brown, the discussions focused on using the facility for bus production rather than passenger vehicles.

The Brampton Assembly Plant, which previously produced models such as the Dodge Challenger and Chrysler 300, has been inactive since late 2023. Stellantis had attempted to repurpose the line for the Jeep Compass, but those plans were halted due to U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles. Stellantis stated it is currently “focusing on finding a lasting production solution” for the site.

The potential sale comes amid broader trade tensions and tariff threats between the United States and Canada. While Stellantis considers selling the plant, the Unifor union represents thousands of workers whose jobs are affected by the facility's status. BYD has previously assembled electric buses in the Toronto area and has expressed interest in the Canadian market through full control or joint ventures.
