BYD investigates safety risks after children use high-voltage charger as swing in China

A viral video from Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, shows two children using a BYD Megawatt Flash Charger cable as a swing at a public charging station. The incident, occurring on October 2, 2026, has raised significant safety concerns regarding high-capacity charging infrastructure in public spaces.

BYD customer service confirmed the incident on October 4, 2026, stating that using charging equipment for play is strictly prohibited. The company has dispatched maintenance personnel to inspect the Nanning facility and plans to increase physical inspections and monitoring at its charging stations.

The equipment involved is part of the BYD Megawatt Flash Charger system, which utilizes a 1,000-volt high-voltage architecture capable of delivering up to 1,000 kW (1 MW). To manage the heavy cables required for such high current, the system uses a T-track mechanism with a spring-based retraction system to keep cables suspended, which can inadvertently create a pendulum effect if misused.
