BYD unveils Denza Bao 5 SUV and Shark pickup at Goodwood

Chinese automaker BYD used the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed to launch several new models for the European market. The premium BYD‑Denza brand introduced the Bao 5, a plug‑in hybrid SUV priced from £69,500 in the UK. It combines a 1.5‑litre turbo‑charged gasoline engine with two electric motors for a total output of 544 hp (536 bhp) and 760 Nm of torque, delivering 0‑62 mph in 4.8 seconds and a combined WLTP range of up to 835 km. The Bao 5 targets rivals such as the Land Rover Defender and Toyota Land Cruiser with a ladder‑frame chassis, selectable off‑road modes and a 31.8 kWh Blade battery that charges from 30 % to 80 % in about 16 minutes. The same event revealed the BYD Shark, the company’s first plug‑in hybrid pickup. The 5.46‑m long, double‑cab vehicle is powered by a 1.5‑litre turbo engine plus front and rear electric motors, producing 436 hp and 650 Nm. It offers an electric‑only range of roughly 90 km, a total range of about 675 km, and a payload of 790 kg with a 2 500 kg towing capacity. Pricing in the UK starts at £47,290 (≈ 63 k USD). The Shark features four terrain modes, a 32.2 kWh Blade battery, fast DC charging (55 kW) and a Vehicle‑to‑Load (V2L) output of 6 kW. BYD also announced the Dolphin G DM‑i, the cheapest plug‑in hybrid supermini in the UK at £23,990. It uses the same DMi hybrid system, a 1.5‑litre engine and two electric motors, delivering up to 209 bhp, a 24.8‑mile electric‑only range and a combined WLTP range of over 600 miles. The Dolphin will be available in four trims from late 2026.
