BYD launches DM-i tech in India as US tags it a military-linked firm while China targets 80% EV sales
In India, BYD India displayed its DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) technology, an electric‑first hybrid system that promises a combined range of over 1,200 km and aims to make sustainable mobility more versatile for Indian consumers. Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles Business Rajeev Chauhan said the launch "marks a pivotal step in our commitment to making sustainable mobility more versatile and accessible for Indian consumers."
The United States Department of Defense added BYD, alongside Nio and other EV‑supply‑chain companies, to a list of "Chinese military companies" under the National Defense Authorization Act, alleging direct and indirect affiliations with the Chinese defense industrial base and opening the possibility of restrictions on contracts with the US military.
In China, BYD projects that electric vehicles could soon represent up to 80% of new car sales, after recent data showed EVs accounted for roughly 63% of new passenger‑vehicle sales this year. The company cites rapid market growth, strong state support, and advances in battery and fast‑charging technology as drivers of this surge.
