BYD launches electric kei car Racco in Japan

Chinese automaker BYD has introduced the Racco, its first electric vehicle built to Japan's kei‑car specifications. Priced from about ¥2.1 million (≈ €11,500) and NZ$22,000, the Racco meets the length, width and power limits of the kei class at 3.395 m long and 47 kW (64 hp). The entry model uses a 22 kWh battery with a claimed WLTC range of up to 210 km, while a higher‑spec version offers a 35 kWh pack and up to 320 km. Features include an 8‑inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1‑inch infotainment screen and over‑the‑air software updates. The launch positions BYD against established Japanese manufacturers such as Toyota, Suzuki and Daihatsu, marking the first time a non‑Japanese maker has released a kei‑class EV. BYD’s New Zealand general manager Warren Willmot said the company has not ruled out bringing the model to New Zealand, but any decision will depend on pricing and market viability.
