BYD launches Racco electric kei car in Japan targeting 10,000 annual sales
Chinese EV manufacturer BYD has introduced the Racco, the first electric kei‑car built by a foreign brand for Japan. The model is offered in three variants – the Racco 200, 300 Plus and 300 Premium – and uses Blade‑type lithium‑iron‑phosphate batteries (22.4 kWh in the entry model, 35.8 kWh in the higher trims). The WLTC range is 210 km for the base version and up to 320 km for the top spec. Pricing starts at ¥2.145 million (about US$13 000); after the ¥150,000 national EV subsidy the effective price falls below ¥2 million. BYD aims to sell 10 000 units per year and is expanding a dealer network to about 77 outlets across Japan. Standard equipment includes electric sliding doors, advanced driver‑assist systems, fast DC charging up to 100 kW, a 63 hp (47 kW) motor delivering 160 Nm of torque, and a long‑term battery and vehicle warranty.
