BYD launches Great Tang flagship electric SUV in China

Chinese automaker BYD unveiled the Great Tang, a 5.2‑metre three‑row electric SUV that becomes the brand's flagship model. The rear‑wheel‑drive version offers a CLTC range of up to 950 km, while all‑wheel‑drive variants reach 850 km. Powered by a second‑generation Blade LFP battery (130 kWh) and a 1 000 V architecture, the SUV can charge from 10 % to 70 % in five minutes and to 97 % in ten minutes using up to 1 000 kW flash charging. Acceleration to 100 km/h is claimed at 3.9 seconds for the dual‑motor 585 kW version.

The Great Tang seats 2+2+3, featuring zero‑gravity front seats, a rear‑row infotainment display, HUD, integrated fridge and rear‑wheel steering with a 5.2‑metre turning radius. Prices start at 239 900 yuan (about US$61 000) for the base rear‑wheel‑drive model and 309 900 yuan (about US$78 000) for the top AWD version. Pre‑sales attracted roughly 150 000 orders, prompting a double postponement of the launch to ensure production capacity.

The launch aims to fill a gap in BYD's premium lineup and to compete with domestic rivals such as Li Auto, Aito, Leapmotor and NIO’s sub‑brands, reinforcing BYD’s momentum after selling over 383 000 new‑energy vehicles in May 2026.
