BYD launches Great Tang SUV with 600‑mile range as Atto 1 gains traction in Australia

Chinese automaker BYD unveiled its new full‑size electric SUV, the Great Tang, in Beijing. The model attracted more than 150,000 pre‑orders within weeks of its debut, with the company reporting 30,000 orders in the first 24 hours and over 100,000 in two weeks. The SUV offers a claimed CLTC range of up to 590‑600 miles and can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes on BYD’s 1,000‑volt platform. Pricing starts at 239,900 yuan (about US$35,500) for the base version and 269,900 yuan (about US$40,000) for the longer‑range flagship trim. Features include a seven‑seat layout, multiple display screens, massage seats, a built‑in cooler and roof‑mounted lidar for driver assistance.

In Australia, BYD’s compact Atto 1 has been reviewed after selling more than 2,400 units in its first six months. The Premium version retails for under AU$28,000 before on‑road costs and comes with a larger 43.2 kWh LFP battery delivering roughly 310 km WLTP range (about 280 km in real‑world driving). Powered by a 115 kW front‑motor, the car accelerates from 0‑100 km/h in 9.1 seconds and includes features such as a 10.1‑inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, lane‑keep‑assist and radar cruise control. Reviewers note a well‑insulated cabin, comfortable seating and a pricing advantage over comparable petrol models.
