BYD launches Racco electric kei car in Japan with 320 km range
BYD introduced the Racco, its first electric kei‑car designed specifically for Japan, on 28 July 2026. The model is offered in three grades – the entry‑level 200 with a 210 km WLTC range, and the 300Plus and 300Premium with up to 320 km range. Prices start at ¥2.145 million (≈US$13 000) before the ¥150 000 government clean‑energy EV subsidy, bringing the effective price below ¥2 million.
The Racco features power‑sliding rear doors, a flat‑folding rear seat that expands cargo volume to about 1 372 L, V2L capability, six airbags, disc brakes on all wheels and a suite of driver‑assistance functions. BYD markets the vehicle as the world’s first software‑defined vehicle (SDV) in the kei segment, allowing over‑the‑air updates.
Kei cars represent roughly 40 % of Japan’s new‑vehicle sales, and BYD set an ambitious target of 10 000 Racco units by the end of 2026 – an amount equal to its total Japanese sales to date. However, BYD scored zero points in Japan’s 200‑point subsidy scoring system, so the Racco receives only ¥150 000 subsidy, far less than the ¥580 000 granted to domestic competitors such as Nissan’s Sakura and Honda’s N‑One.
