BYD launches 436‑hp hybrid Shark pickup in Europe

Chinese automaker BYD has introduced the Shark, a 5.5‑metre long double‑cab hybrid pickup, marking the brand's first entry into the European pickup segment. The vehicle combines a 1.5‑litre turbo gasoline engine with two electric motors to produce a total output of 436 hp, enabling a 0‑100 km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds. It offers an electric‑only WLTP range of 90 km from a 32.2 kWh battery, and a combined driving range of about 675 km. The Shark can tow up to 2,500 kg and carry a payload of 790 kg, and is equipped with all‑wheel drive and four terrain modes.

The model is aimed at markets such as Greece and Portugal and will compete with established pickups like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux. BYD plans to price the Shark aggressively, following its strategy of offering high‑spec, low‑cost vehicles in Europe.
