BYD links vehicle sales to forest conservation in Ecuador
BYD Ecuador, in partnership with Fundación Futuro and Fundación Jocotoco, has launched a conservation initiative that links electric vehicle sales to the protection of the Chocó Andino ecosystem. Through the NFTree program, which utilizes blockchain technology to ensure traceability, the alliance commits 1,000 square meters of biodiversity conservation for every BYD vehicle sold in the country.
To date, the initiative has successfully conserved approximately 429 hectares (over 4.2 million square meters) within the Yanacocha Reserve. Located on the western slopes of Pichincha, the reserve is critical for protecting the critically endangered Black-breasted Puffleg hummingbird and serves as a vital water source for the northwest of Quito by protecting micro-basins linked to the Mindo and Pichán rivers.
The project aims to address the rapid reduction of original forest cover in the Ecuadorian Chocó, a region where experts suggest less than 5% of the original forest remains.
