BYD overtakes Tesla in European EV market with 137% sales surge
Chinese electric‑vehicle maker BYD reported a 137% rise in new registrations in Europe during May 2026, delivering roughly 32,400 units and raising its market share to 2.3%, ahead of Tesla’s 2.0% share. The growth helped BYD surpass Tesla in total European deliveries for the first five months of the year, bringing its cumulative total to 135,307 vehicles.
At the same time, Morgan Stanley raised its second‑quarter delivery forecast for Tesla, citing stronger sales trends in Europe and China, while keeping its price target at $415. Analysts note that BYD is expanding its ecosystem, planning to install 300 high‑power “Flash” charging points in the United Kingdom within nine months. Despite the operational momentum, BYD’s stock traded near its 52‑week low, down about 24% year‑to‑date.
