Automotive industry shifts as Chinese brands expand in Brazil and new charging tech emerges
The Brazilian automotive industry is experiencing a significant shift driven by the rapid expansion of Chinese manufacturers. While domestic production grew by 8.7% through September, vehicle sales rose by 18%, indicating that a growing portion of demand is being met by imports. Chinese brands, particularly BYD, have seen registration growth exceeding 100%, capturing an increasing share of the market and challenging traditional South American export destinations.
In response to market shifts, BYD is expanding its luxury presence in Brazil with the introduction of its ultra-luxury brand, Yangwang, scheduled for 2027. The brand plans to launch high-tech models such as the U8 SUV, which features water-floating capabilities, and the U9 supercar.
Meanwhile, technological advancements are reshaping infrastructure. Honda, in partnership with Taisei Corporation, is testing a dynamic wireless power transfer (D-WPT) system in Japan. This technology uses modules installed beneath the road surface to charge electric vehicles, including heavy trucks, while they are in motion. Testing is set to expand to the Tateyama Expressway in 2027.
In Europe, BYD’s premium brand DENZA is preparing for an Austrian market entry. The brand will begin pre-sales of the Z9GT model in late 2026, featuring ultra-fast charging technology capable of exceeding 1,000 kW, with an official brand launch planned for early 2027.
