BYD to launch Great Seagull electric hatchback in late 2026
BYD has confirmed the development of a new electric hatchback named the ‘Great Seagull’, which is scheduled to enter the Chinese market by the end of 2026. Announced by Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD’s Ocean series, at the Chengdu Auto Show, the model is designed to bridge the gap between the existing Seagull and the larger Dolphin models.
Technical specifications released through China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) indicate the Great Seagull will be larger than the current Seagull, measuring 4,205 mm in length with a 2,650 mm wheelbase. The new model will feature a more powerful 95 kW (127 hp) electric motor, a significant increase from the 55 kW (75 hp) output of the standard Seagull.
While official pricing and battery capacities have not been finalized, industry expectations suggest the vehicle may utilize BYD’s next-generation ‘Blade Battery 2.0’ and flash charging technology. The inclusion of a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor suggests the model will also offer advanced driver assistance and safety features.
