Geely and Chinese EV makers drive global market shifts
The global electric vehicle and battery markets are seeing significant shifts. CATL continues to dominate the battery sector, holding a 39.9% market share in the first half of 2026, followed by BYD at 14.4%.
Geely Auto has reported record growth, with global sales reaching 1.42 million units in the first half of 2026. The company has increased its 2026 international export target to 920,000 units. To mitigate European import tariffs, Geely plans to begin mass production of premium electric models at Volvo's European plants, including facilities in Belgium and Sweden, starting in 2028. Additionally, Geely is investing in solid-state battery technology, aiming for an energy density of 500 Wh/kg, with pilot production targeted for 2027.
In the consumer segment, Xiaomi reported second-quarter revenues of 108.9 billion RMB, driven by its smartphone and IoT businesses alongside its growing electric vehicle division. Meanwhile, BYD continues to expand its model lineup, including the high-range Da Han sedan and various hybrid SUVs like the Tai 7 and Sealion 5.
