BYD surpasses Chevrolet Tracker and leads Brazil SUV market with electric and hybrid models
Chinese automaker BYD is reshaping Brazil's automotive landscape. Its fully electric BYD Yuan Plus has overtaken the popular Chevrolet Tracker in sales, offering a 204‑hp electric motor, a Blade LFP battery and a price starting at R$ 235,990. The model’s longer range and lower operating costs are attracting consumers as Brazil’s electric‑vehicle market expands.
In parallel, the BYD Song Plus hybrid SUV has become the most armored vehicle in Brazil, displacing the long‑standing Toyota Corolla Cross. The ranking released by the Brazilian Armoring Association shows the Song Plus leading a trend toward moderately priced, well‑protected SUVs, with blind‑folding costs now ranging between R$ 300,000 and R$ 350,000. The growth of armored‑vehicle authorizations—up 6.5% in the first quarter of 2026—reflects broader demand for safety, with a more gender‑balanced buyer base.
Both developments underscore BYD’s accelerating market share in Brazil, pressuring traditional manufacturers to accelerate electrification and safety offerings.
