BYD targets 2027 for solid-state battery electric vehicle

BYD plans to launch an electric vehicle featuring solid-state battery technology by 2027, according to Executive Vice President Stella Li. While the company has not yet disclosed the specific vehicle model, battery specifications, or a mass production timeline, the initiative marks a major step in the manufacturer's technological roadmap.

BYD's battery division, FinDreams, is currently focusing on a sulphide-based solid electrolyte approach, exploring materials such as lithium phosphorus sulfur chlorine (LPSC). The division has developed prototype cells with capacities of 20 Ah and 60 Ah, targeting energy densities near 400 Wh/kg at the cell level.

Technical challenges remain regarding the implementation of this technology, particularly concerning contact loss at the solid-to-solid interface caused by the expansion and contraction of electrodes during use cycles. These engineering hurdles must be addressed to maintain battery impedance and capacity over time.
