BYD to launch first solid-state battery vehicle by 2027

BYD plans to launch its first electric vehicle equipped with solid-state battery technology by 2027. Executive Vice President Stella Li stated that the company aims to demonstrate its leadership in the commercialization of this technology, which utilizes a sulfide-based solid electrolyte.

These batteries offer significant advantages over traditional lithium-ion cells, including higher energy density, reduced weight, and improved thermal stability, which minimizes fire risks. However, due to high production costs and the requirement for extreme cleanroom conditions, the technology will initially be restricted to high-end luxury models.

While demonstration vehicles are expected in 2027, industry experts and BYD's own technical leadership suggest that mass-market industrialization and widespread adoption for affordable vehicles are not anticipated until approximately 2030. For the time being, standard LFP batteries will continue to be used for more economical models.
