BYD unveils major redesign of budget electric SEAGULL hatchback

Chinese electric‑vehicle maker BYD is overhauling its low‑cost city hatchback, the Seagull. New specifications released in documents from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology show a larger body – 4.205 m long, 1.810 m wide, 1.570 m high with a 2.650 m wheelbase, adding about 43 cm to overall length and 15 cm to wheelbase – bringing it close to the size of BYD’s Dolphin model. The vehicle’s curb weight will range between 1,180 kg and 1,255 kg.

The powertrain is upgraded from a 55 kW (75 hp) motor to a permanent‑magnet synchronous motor delivering 95 kW (127 hp), raising the top speed to 150 km/h. It will use FinDreams‑supplied lithium‑iron‑phosphate (LFP) battery packs of 30 kWh or 38 kWh, providing CLTC‑rated ranges of roughly 305 km and 405 km respectively. A new camera integrated into the rear brake light adds advanced driver‑assistance and autonomous‑driving features.

The refreshed Seagull, slated for launch in June 2026, will be marketed worldwide under different names such as BYD Atto 1, BYD Dolphin Mini and BYD Dolphin Surf, as the company seeks to regain market share after trailing behind Geely’s EX2 in sales.
