BYD updates electric vehicle lineup with new models and safety ratings

BYD is rolling out significant updates across its vehicle lineup, including safety ratings, model refreshes, and new generations of its compact electric cars.

The BYD Sealion 5 received a three-star ANCAP safety rating, marking the first time a BYD model has failed to achieve a five-star rating under the organization's new assessment protocols. ANCAP noted that the vehicle's performance in crash avoidance and safe driving was a limiting factor.

Simultaneously, the company is introducing a second generation of the Dolphin Mini (also known as the Seagull in China). This new iteration features a larger footprint, increasing in length to approximately 4.2 meters and wheelbase to 2.65 meters. Key mechanical shifts include a move to rear-wheel drive with a 129 hp motor, which also enables the addition of a front trunk (frunk). The interior will adopt a more minimalist, Tesla-style design, removing the traditional instrument cluster in favor of a centralized multimedia screen.

In other markets, the Dolphin Surf is receiving a 2026 model year update. This refresh includes a five-seat configuration option, improved ergonomics with a steering-column gear selector, and enhanced technology such as Google Built-in on higher trims.
