Bydgoszcz residents dispute noise from Holy Trinity Church bells

Residents in Bydgoszcz have filed complaints with the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection regarding the noise levels produced by the bells at the Holy Trinity Church. The church, which features a 30-meter tower and three historic bells, rings twice daily at 7:00 and 17:00 to announce upcoming masses.

Parish priest Janusz Tomczak has defended the tradition, noting that the bells have rung in the same manner for over a century without previous complaint. He suggested that the noise levels should be assessed against the 55-decibel standard for 24-hour algorithms.

Some observers have characterized the push to silence the bells as a methodical attempt to remove religious symbols from the public sphere. There are allegations that the complaints may be linked to the Freedom from Religion Foundation, an organization established in 2011 that advocates for the rights of non-religious individuals.
