BYD's Great Tang electric SUV launches with record 150,000 preorders

Chinese automaker BYD officially launched its flagship full-size electric SUV, the Great Tang (also called Da Tang), at the Beijing Auto Show. The model is priced from 239,900 yuan ($35,500) to 309,900 yuan and offers a claimed electric range of up to 950 km (about 590 miles) on a single charge. It features BYD’s second‑generation Blade Battery, a 1,000‑volt architecture, flash‑charging that can restore 10 % to 97 % in nine minutes, and a 2+2+3 seven‑seat layout with premium amenities.

The launch generated over 150,000 pre‑orders in less than two weeks, a record for a BYD vehicle, and is expected to support the company’s sales recovery after eight months of decline. BYD positions the Great Tang against large‑segment rivals such as Leapmotor’s D19 and Nio’s Onvo L90, while also pressuring mid‑to‑high‑end models from Li Auto and Aito. The company reported a modest 0.26 % year‑on‑year increase in NEV wholesale sales in May, signaling the potential impact of the new model on its market performance.
