Byggföretagen calls for Swedish infrastructure reforms

Byggföretagen has conducted a survey among Swedish parliamentary parties regarding priority infrastructure investments to enhance national competitiveness. The industry organization emphasizes that increasing capacity for both passenger and freight traffic is essential for employment, preparedness, and economic strength.

Kristoffer Tamsons, CEO of Byggföretagen, noted a gap between political ambitions and actual implementation, citing recurring delays and cost increases. To address these issues, the organization proposes three primary reforms:

1. Addressing the infrastructure debt through a long-term, sustainably financed maintenance plan for roads and railways, particularly to combat climate change pressures.

2. Introducing competition for Trafikverket. The organization suggests alternative organizational models or more autonomous project structures with dedicated budgets to drive efficiency and speed up project delivery.

3. Expanding alternative financing options. This includes promoting public-private partnerships to allow private actors to initiate and operate infrastructure, and seeking exceptions to interest deduction limitation rules similar to other EU nations.
