Byron Donalds challenges revenue estimates and clashes with David Jolly

Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds is challenging the revenue projections provided by the state’s nonpartisan Revenue Estimating Conference. While state economists from the Office of Economic and Demographic Research estimate that Amendment 3—which would increase homestead exemptions—could extract up to $11.86 billion annually from local budgets by 2030-31, Donalds has questioned the accuracy of these assessments, citing past instances where projected shortfalls did not materialize.

If passed, the amendment could significantly impact local government funding for infrastructure, schools, and public safety. Estimates suggest Miami-Dade could see a $445 million revenue decrease, while counties like St. Lucie could face losses as high as 35%.

Separately, the primary campaign between Donalds and Democrat David Jolly has intensified over cultural issues. Jolly criticized a $25 million ad campaign by Donalds that focuses on LGBTQ+ and transgender rights rather than economic concerns such as housing or healthcare. Donalds responded by stating he intends to highlight the stark cultural differences between the candidates, specifically regarding gender-affirming care and sports participation.
