ByteDance explores TikTok P2P payments and signs AI copyright pact
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is reportedly developing a peer-to-peer (P2P) payment feature that would allow users to send money directly through private messages. Code discovered in the TikTok iPhone app in the United States suggests that the feature would enable recipients to “tap to accept” transfers before they expire and allow senders to attach messages to payments, similar to the functionality of PayPal’s Venmo. While TikTok has stated the feature is in early development and not currently being tested in any market, the project appears to leverage TikTok Pay, a service already used for TikTok Shop transactions in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Separately, ByteDance has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) to strengthen intellectual property protections for its generative AI models. The agreement establishes a shared framework of guardrails for ByteDance’s Seedance video-generation and Seedream image-generation models, which are integrated into platforms such as TikTok, CapCut, and Dreamina. This pact follows a cease-and-desist letter sent by the MPA in February 2026 regarding concerns that the AI tools could generate copyrighted characters and celebrity likenesses without authorization.
