ByteDance and Tencent face talent and culture shifts in China's AI race

The Chinese large language model (LLM) industry is experiencing significant talent movement and organizational tension. At ByteDance, Huang Wenhao, a former co-founder of 01.AI and head of model evaluation for the Seed team, has departed the company. His exit coincides with a major restructuring of ByteDance's Seed division, which is establishing a new “Seed Model-Alignment & Preparedness” department to integrate safety and alignment directly into the model development process.

Simultaneously, internal cultural tensions have surfaced at Tencent. Reports regarding Tencent's Chief AI Scientist, Yao Shunyu, have sparked debate over competitive strategies. The controversy centers on discussions regarding how large tech firms can compete with the high engineering efficiency of startups like DeepSeek. While DeepSeek has gained prominence for achieving high performance with significantly lower computational costs, major tech giants are grappling with how to balance massive resource advantages against the need for rapid, efficient algorithmic innovation.
