ByteDance clarifies TikTok US ownership and pushes ahead with advanced AI models

ByteDance remains the global parent of TikTok, but the U.S. platform is operated by TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, a company that is majority American‑owned. Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX each hold 15% of the venture, ByteDance retains 19.9%, and other investors collectively own about 35.1%.

At the same time, ByteDance is accelerating its artificial‑intelligence efforts. Its SeeDance model is among the world’s most advanced video‑generation systems, while the consumer‑facing Doubao model serves 324 million monthly active users in China. The company has expanded data‑center capacity, doubled its cloud unit Volcano Engine, and is exploring custom AI chips. The internal Seed team, led by former DeepMind scientist Wu Yonghui, now numbers roughly 2,000 researchers and engineers worldwide and follows an independent development approach, as emphasized by founder Zhang Yiming in a recent internal meeting.
