ByteDance plans massive AI data center expansion in Inner Mongolia

Inner Mongolia is emerging as a critical hub for China’s digital infrastructure, driven by its proximity to Beijing, abundant land, and relatively low energy costs. The region’s cooler climate and access to cheap electricity make it an ideal location for energy-intensive data centers that require significant cooling and constant power.

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is reportedly planning a massive expansion of its computing infrastructure in the region. The company is in preliminary discussions with vendors in Ulanqab to integrate an estimated five to six gigawatts of new compute power. This large-scale artificial intelligence data center cluster is intended for development in the Jining district.

Such an expansion represents a massive financial commitment. Based on industry estimates that a single gigawatt of AI data center capacity can cost approximately 160 billion yuan, ByteDance’s projected project could require an investment ranging from 800 billion to 960 billion yuan. Other major Chinese technology firms, including Huawei and Kuaishou, have already established a presence in the area.
