BYU football offense shows strength during Fall Camp scrimmages

BYU football's offense showed significant strength during recent Fall Camp scrimmages, with defensive coordinator Kelly Poppinga stating, “I think we're playing one of the best offenses in the country.” The offense demonstrated physicality and control at the line of scrimmage, a key area of focus following a season where the team ranked 16th nationally in quality drive rates but struggled to convert those drives into touchdowns.

The offensive line is expected to be a cornerstone for the 2026 season, anchored by seniors Bruce Mitchell, Andrew Gentry, and Sonny Makasini, alongside recent addition Paki Finau. Offensive line coach TJ Woods emphasized the developmental nature of the position, noting that success comes through a “long, slow burn.”

Sophomore quarterback Bear Bachmeier has shown improvement in redzone efficiency and ball placement. After a freshman season that helped lead the Cougars to a 12-2 record and a Big 12 championship game appearance, Bachmeier is expected to lead the unit as the team prepares for its season opener against Utah Tech on September 5.
