BYU football shows defensive focus and QB growth during Fall Camp

BYU football concluded its third week of Fall Camp with mixed results during preseason scrimmages. Defensive coordinator Kelly Poppinga emphasized the necessity of stopping the run, stating that a successful defense must hold opponents to 3 yards or less per carry. This focus follows a period where the Cougars' defense ranked highly nationally in rushing defense, though recent scrimmage performance highlighted areas for improvement.

On the offensive side, quarterback Bear Bachmeier has shown growth in his ability to extend plays. While previously focused on staying within the pocket to minimize mistakes, Bachmeier has begun utilizing his scrambling ability to create chunk-yardage plays and find receivers under pressure.

Despite offensive progress, the defense's pass rush demonstrated significant potential during two-minute drill exercises, occasionally overpowering the starting offense.
