BYU restructures athletic department, changing football coach reporting line

Brigham Young University (BYU) has announced a restructuring of its athletic department. As part of this change, football head coach Kalani Sitake will no longer report directly to athletic director Brian Santiago. Instead, Sitake will report to university Vice President Keith Vorkink, who also supervises Santiago.

The move follows comments from Sitake regarding the challenges of the program, noting that the team has had to “do the most with the least.” The restructuring has fueled speculation regarding a rift between Sitake and Santiago, amid rumors that the athletic director may favor the men’s basketball program over football.

Separately, the BYU football team has concluded its fall training camp. Head coach Sitake reported that the team avoided catastrophic injuries and noted a competitive balance between the offense and defense during preseason scrimmages. The team enters the season with significant returning talent, including quarterback Bear Bachmeier and preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin.
