Greek Castle of the Mongols in Pella Reopens After Restoration

The Byzantine‑era Castle of the Mongols, a fortified settlement dating to the early 9th century in Pella, Greece, was officially handed over to the public by Culture Minister Lina Mendoni. The restoration, funded with €1.85 million from the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund, included structural repairs, conservation work and the development of surrounding public spaces.

Mendoni said the monument “is one of the most important Byzantine fortified settlements of the region and a key part of our national heritage.” The site, historically linked to campaigns of Emperor Basil II and Alexios I Komnenos, now aims to boost cultural tourism and local economic activity in the northern border area.

The project is part of the Ministry of Culture’s Cultural Development and Prosperity Map, coordinated with regional and municipal authorities to protect and promote Greece’s historic assets.
