C2PA standard integration aims to combat digital misinformation

To combat the global rise of misinformation, deepfakes, and AI-generated content, news organizations are increasingly integrating the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standard into their production workflows.

C2PA is a cryptographic framework that establishes a verifiable chain of custody for digital assets. By embedding tamper-evident metadata at the point of capture, the system creates Content Credentials that record the device used, location, time, and any subsequent edits made to an image, video, or audio clip. This allows audiences to verify the authenticity and edit history of media.

According to an analysis by IBC.org, the open-source implementation of C2PA is becoming a primary industry strategy for certifying news. The standard is supported by a consortium including Adobe, Microsoft, Intel, the BBC, and the New York Times.
