Cabañeros National Park begins annual deer rutting season
The annual deer rutting season, known as ‘la berrea’, has begun in Cabañeros National Park in Castilla-La Mancha. During this period, male deer emit powerful bellows to attract females and defend their territory against other males.
This biological cycle typically occurs between late September and early October, though exact timing depends on weather conditions. The phenomenon transforms the park's Mediterranean landscape, including its plains and mountains, into a unique auditory and visual experience for nature enthusiasts.
According to Carolina Sánchez-Molero, director of the park, the rutting is more than a display of strength; it serves as a vital communication method where deer exchange information regarding their size and physical fitness. The park covers more than 40,000 hectares and is often referred to as the ‘Spanish Serengeti’ due to its rich biodiversity and open landscapes.
