Cabbage nutritional benefits and seasonal availability in Vietnam
Cabbage is entering its peak season in Vietnam, offering a highly nutritious and affordable food option. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), cabbage is among the foods with the lowest pesticide residues because it naturally produces glucosinolates to deter insects. Additionally, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirmed that 86% of tested cabbage samples showed no detectable pesticide residues.
Nutritionally, cabbage is rich in fiber and vitamins C, K, A, and U, along with compounds such as Lutein, Apigenin, Luteolin, and Glucosinolates. Key health benefits include supporting digestion through insoluble fiber, aiding weight management due to its low calorie count (approximately 34 calories per cooked bowl), and providing anti-inflammatory properties that may help protect cardiovascular health by reducing arterial plaque formation.
