Cabildo de Tenerife implements active break programs in 100 schools

The Cabildo de Tenerife has concluded the third edition of its 'Recreos Activos' program, which involved more than 100 primary and secondary educational centers during the 2025-2026 school year. The initiative aims to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits by revitalizing school break times.

In primary schools, specialized monitors worked in 49 institutions to encourage daily exercise, supported by donations of sports equipment. Secondary schools participated by integrating inclusive and egalitarian sports into their breaks, utilizing equipment for functional training, alternative sports like Ultimate and Tchoukball, and traditional Canary Island sports such as lucha canaria and juegos de bola canaria.

Yolanda Moliné, the Delegate Counselor for Sports, emphasized that the program is a strategic tool to combat high obesity and overweight rates in the Canary Islands, which stand at 45.8%. Moliné noted that intervening in schools is essential for ensuring social equity, as there is a direct correlation between lower family incomes and higher obesity rates.
