Cable theft causes telecommunications outages in Mexico and Ecuador
Theft of telecommunications cables has caused significant service disruptions in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, and Guayaquil, Ecuador.
In Ramos Arizpe, an internet and telephone outage lasting over 12 hours affected homes and businesses, particularly in the Benavides Pompa area. Local economic development official Jacobo Zertuche reported that the theft occurred in the Santa María park area. The outage hindered commercial operations, making it difficult for merchants to process card payments. Telmex has been notified and is working to restore the general infrastructure failure.
In Guayaquil, the National Transit Agency (ANT) on Vía a Daule lost its system connection due to network cable theft. This marks the fourth time such a theft has occurred at this location. The outage has caused long queues and protests among users attempting to complete administrative procedures. The agency is currently awaiting a response from CNT regarding a timeline for restoration. The facility is also reportedly struggling with aging equipment and infrastructure issues.
