Brazil sees surge in theft of electrical wiring at public facilities

A theft of power cables at the Unidade Básica de Saúde (UBS) in the Armação neighborhood of Penha disrupted electricity and forced the clinic to postpone patient appointments on Thursday, June 18. Municipal teams restored power later that afternoon and services resumed.

In Barretos, three municipal early‑education centers reported multiple incidents of stolen electrical wiring and related equipment, including copper tubing and air‑conditioner components. The thefts caused damage to school infrastructure and prompted police investigations.

Both incidents illustrate a growing pattern of cable theft targeting public health and education facilities in Brazil, prompting concerns about service continuity and the need for increased security measures.
