Cabo de Hornos leaders submit community demands to Chilean commission
The Mayor of Cabo de Hornos, Patricio Fernández, has submitted a formal petition to the Chilean Chamber of Deputies' Extreme Zones and Antarctic Commission. The document, compiled by social organizations and community leaders, outlines critical demands for the isolated region, including improvements to the Cristina Calderón Community Hospital, educational enhancements for Liceo Donald McIntyre Griffits, and better connectivity across land, sea, air, and digital networks.
A central proposal is the creation of a ‘Special Agenda for Cabo de Hornos’ to coordinate health, security, infrastructure, and economic development. The petition also calls for an Interministerial Working Group involving local government, regional authorities, and community representatives.
In response to these demands, the commission met with regional leaders and ministers to discuss the 2027 Budget Law and the protection of resources within the Special Plan for the Development of Extreme Zones. During the session, which included representatives from the Magallanes region, participants expressed support for recognizing September 21 as a regional holiday.
