Cabo de Palos and Palos de la Frontera mark historic maritime anniversaries
On 4 August, Cabo de Palos will host the 120th anniversary of the sinking of the transatlantic ship Sirio, the deadliest civil‑maritime disaster in Spain. The free programme begins at 19:00 with a requiem and floral offering by local fishermen, who rescued many passengers in 1906. Speakers include historian Luis Miguel Pérez Adán, dive‑instructor Miguel Ángel Gallego and fisherman Bartolomé Navarro. The event will continue at the Sub Up Hotel with an open public talk.
A day earlier, Palos de la Frontera will commemorate the 534th anniversary of the departure of the discovery fleets that set sail for the New World. The municipal government, led by mayor Milagros Romero, will open the ceremony at 21:00 with a floral tribute to the monument of Martín Alonso Pinzón. The programme also features the unveiling of the patron saint festival poster and a concert by local singer Soni López.
Both commemorations highlight the region’s maritime heritage and draw on community participation to remember historic sea voyages and tragedies.
