Cabo de Santo Agostinho sees major water and logistics projects

The Pernambuco water utility Compesa announced a public hearing on July 27 to discuss the Engenho Maranhão water system, a public‑private partnership that will build the Engenho Maranhão dam, expand treatment capacity and modernise 42 km of pipelines. The project, valued at over R$1.1 billion, aims to secure water for about 310 000 residents of Ipojuca and Cabo de Santo Agostinho and to reduce flood risks in the Ipojuca River basin.

At the same time, Maersk opened a new 12 000 m² distribution centre in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, just 20 km from the Suape port complex and the Recife International Airport. The facility features 36 dock doors and cross‑docking capabilities, targeting the rapid growth of cargo traffic in Brazil’s Northeast, which moved 329.7 million tonnes of cargo in 2025. The centre serves sectors such as retail, automotive, technology and renewable‑energy components, reinforcing the region’s logistical importance.
